Roads in tropical forests is one of the main causes of deforestation. In the 1970s, was started theTransamazon highway construction, with the objective to interconnect the northeast to the north of Brazil.Thinking in forest protect area of Pará state, has thrity nine Conservation Units and sixty two IndigenousReserves. Protected areas are one of the most effective forms to forest conservation. This study has the objectiveto analyze the deforestation dynamics in a 50 km range of the road and verify the importance support ofProtected Areas to forest around those areas. For that, annual deforestation data were obtained from PRODESProject and limits of protected areas around the influence area. The result showed that must deforestation areaoccurred before 2000s and follows the fishbone pattern, deforestation type in this region. The deforestationarea tend to decrease as far as distant they are of main road. Unprotected areas had 54% of deforestation in total, and in protected areas, this number decrease to 4.2%, changing the idea that these areas had remain lowdeforestation rates due to the distance from access roads. Even with less deforested area, the conservation unitssuffer with approximately 10% the deforestation in the inner part of the forest, and Indigenous Reservespresented less than 5%. The result shows the importance of improving management and resources for this areas,in order to increase barriers to illegal extraction of wood and consequent degradation however, the ProtectedAreas are an effective way to Amazon forest conservation.
